Returning to the natural squatting position to poop is the answer.

In our modern world we have changed our daily eliminations from the natural squatting position, to sitting on a toilet.

Sitting on a toilet restricts the pelvic floor muscles, which causes a “kink” at the rectum and anus, obstructing the flow of waste.  In order to remove the waste, we have to push and strain.

Squatting allows the angle of the pelvic floor to relax and decreases the amount of pressure needed to evacuate stool.  Also the contact of the thighs against the body wall affect the motility of the large intestine:  The right thigh pushes the contents of the cecum upward, and the left thigh squeezes and lifts the sigmoid colon to open the “kink” where it joins the rectum.

I made one of the best decisions for my health and gave myself The Squatty Potty for Christmas.  There are other items available..... LifeStep, HealthStep, Lillipad, and one I would recommend, the Nature's Platform.

love this article! i have a question-if i am still working on squatting properly (katy's you don't know squat) should i start squatting to go to the bathroom even if its in bad form? how would i start?

Henna, you may want to start with a platform such such as the squatty potty where you can sit on the toilet and adjust the placement of the stool so you can work on your form. Or just start squatting if you have that type of platform even if it isn't perfect form.... the more you squat, the better your form will be. If you are trying to do this without a platform, and just hovering over the toilet, that is hard work. You want to be able to get into the deep squat so the pelvic floor can relax.

thank you!!! i am going to get the squatty potty and start working on the squat. the squat is still effective even if my weight is still mostly sitting on the toilet?

Henna, depending on the restriction in your pelvic, hip and ankle mobility, you may need to work into the natural squatting position. So, start with weight on the toilet and work toward full squat and form as you able. Spend time off the toilet working your edge of the squat depth.

Hi Susan,

I was wondering, is it possible to get into a full natural squat on a squatty potty? lillipad and nature's platform say it can't be done on the squatty potty and I'm trying to figure out the best one to get. I'd rather get the squatty potty, as I have 3 I need otget and the prce is right! but if the others work better...maybe I need ot go for it?

I am not sure.... If you have the tallest squatty potty you may be able to get into full squat. I think that I have the 7 in and am not able to full squat. Find out what there return policy is, and if it doesn't work, return it!
